Tell us about the Detective Marcella Witch’s series.

It’s difficult to tell you about the Detective Marcella Witch’s series without giving away too much. There’s a cast of mainly five characters whose lives thoroughly interconnect and evolve from one book to the next. There’s witchcraft and lots of paranormal suspense, and of course a mystery, usually a crime mystery. In that respect, I make sure that each book is a capable stand-alone, and that the reader gets a satisfactory resolve to that mystery by the end of the book. Yet, it’s the continuing backstory that makes the series what it is, the investment in the characters keeps the reader coming back for more. The latest addition, Gone Is The Witch, is book 8 in the series and just came out this February (2013). And let me tell you, it’s a real game changer.

That’s exciting. What genre did you say the books are?

The genre is paranormal suspense and mystery, sort of a Mike Hammer meets Harry Potter on steroids. Sorry J.K.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?

Funny, I’d have thought my readers would look like Stephen King readers. Yet, based on the faces I see on my fan page, the cross section appears much more diverse.  Maybe I didn’t have a clue who was reading Stephen King.

Complete this sentence for us: if you like ____________, then you’ll love the Detective Marcella Witch’s series.

If you like losing yourself in a good book, then you’ll love the Detective Marcella Witch’s Series. A cop out, I know, but I don’t like adjectives and I don’t like comparing my books to others. I hope readers check out my reviews on Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble etc. That will give them a good idea what my books are like.

Tell us a bit more about Detective Tony Marcella.

For a detective, Tony is a complicated protagonist, especially where Lilith is involved. He’s a reluctant romantic at heart who’s not afraid to show his insecurities along with his confidence, his diplomatic prowess along with his stubbornness. He’s sensitive, yet shrewd, and sometimes mixes bravado with bullshit. Sorry, can I say bullshit? In essence, he’s a stand-up guy. And what’s so wrong with that?

Should we start reading from book 1, The Witches Ladder, or can we read the series in any order? Do you have an end planned for the series or will you keep going?

Great question. Although I take pains to assure that one may pick up any volume in the series, read and enjoy the book to its conclusion—one shouldn’t. Truly, the allure of the series is in experiencing the growth of the characters and their relationships. As a matter of fact, two of the main characters, Dominic and Ursula, don’t make their debuts in the series until books two and four, respectively. Is that important? Hmm…

As far as an end plan, I can’t say…or won’t. I will tell you that I am in the process of writing book 9 now and have plans for book 10. I’m not sure who will tell me when it’s gone far enough, my readers or my characters.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

This is the part I doubt anyone really cares much about. So I’ll just insert my author’s bio blurb here. It’s OK, It’s all true.

Dana Donovan grew up in New England where folklore and superstitions can mold a town’s history as much as its people. He exploits that phenomenon in all his books, perpetuating the enigma of small town life and the belief in all that dies is not dead.

Have you got a website where we can keep up with your work? How can we follow you on Twitter and/or Facebook?

Uh, I thought you’d never ask. Check it out.
