Great title. Tell us about What the Dog Ate.
“What the Dog Ate” follows the story of Maggie Baxter — a practical, rule-following accountant, who discovers that her husband of seventeen years is cheating on her. She discovers this at the vet’s office, when the vet surgically extracts a pair of size-tiny lavender thong panties from her chocolate Lab, Kona.

When she confronts her husband, he admits the affair and leaves her for the other woman. Maggie and her the-world-is-my-smorgasbord dog are left to put their lives back together. As Maggie begins to develop a Plan B for her life, she decides to be more like Kona. No, she’s not going to sniff crotches and eat everything that isn’t nailed
down; rather she’ll try to approach life with more ball-chasing
abandon. Finding herself in situations where she begins to go through her usual over-analysis of the pros and cons, she stops and instead asks herself: What would Kona do? With Kona as her guru, Maggie begins her quest to find tail-wagging joy.

What genre is it?
It is humorous women’s fiction, or I also like to call it “dog-lit” – but no one’s ever heard of that as an actual genre. (Although there’s a lot of “dog-lit” out there!)

Dog-lit! What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Dog-lovers, people who want to laugh and forget their/the world’s troubles for a while, or anyone who’s faced having to start over again with their life or career.

Complete this sentence for us: if you like _________________, you’ll love my book.
dogs and books that are “feel good” reads

How would you like the reader to feel as they read the last word of What the Dog Ate?
happy and satisfied (kind of like they just ate the best bowl of ice cream ever)

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
Nothing else is available yet, but I’m finishing up edits on my second novel and hopefully it will be ready to release soon. I also have two others in the works.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Like the main character, Maggie, in “What the Dog Ate,” I used to be an accountant. I was very good at it, but (as Maggie says): it fed my bank account, but not my soul. I found writing while I was looking for something to keep myself occupied while my hubby worked crazy hours. I was definitely bitten by the writing bug! I always felt like a creative person, trapped in a practical person’s body. It’s wonderful to find something that you can be passionate about – like Maggie does in the book.

I live in San Diego with my hubby (originally from Canada) and our rescue pup, Rita (originally from Mexico). We sort of form our own happy little NAFTA.

Do you have a website where we can keep up with your work?
Yes! You can find me and cute pics of my dog at www.jackiebouchard.com You can also link to my blog from there, but it’s not a “normal” writers blog (no posts about my writer’s angst or author interviews… okay, well, maybe occasional posts about my angst… it’s mainly about my dogs.

How can we follow you on Twitter and/or Facebook?

What’s next?
Right now, I’m finishing up edits on a book with the working title, “Just Only Jane.” I haven’t mastered a perfect 30-second synopsis of it yet, but it’s about a 38-year-old woman who is very much a loner, and how her life is changed by a special dog she finds. It’s a “who rescued whom?” story.
