Interview with Kaitlyn Deann, author of The Witches’ Sleep

Tell us about The Witches’ Sleep.

The Witches’ Sleep is my debut novel. Here is the blurb for it:

At only seventeen, Ella Barnes is shot and killed for an unknown reason. She is shocked when she wakes up in a different world, a world of witches. Ella has to learn to adapt to a new body, new life and new world, surrounded by new people. As Ella gets to know Raena, the world of the witches and its people, she realizes they aren’t the perfect creatures they believe themselves to be, and she’s not the type of person to stand around and twiddle her thumbs. Will Ella succeed in changing the mindset of the people? Or will she be doomed to die another cold and tragic death because of her rebellion?

What genre is it?

I think it’s on the line between fantasy and sci-fi, so I’ll say both.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?

I’ve had some of my readers say that all ages, including middle school kids, would enjoy it, but that the older you are, the more you’ll probably enjoy it. It’s mainly for teens though.

How long did it take to write?

It took me 6 months to write, edit and polish The Witches’ Sleep.

What was the most challenging part of your creative process?

The climax and the beginning. I rewrite, literally, 99.9% of all my beginnings (by beginning, I mean first quarter of the book). The climax was difficult to write because so much action was going on and I was afraid of rushing it. I was so excited I didn’t want to miss a thing so I took my time. It was extremely hard but necessary, for me at least.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Kaitlyn. Most of my friends call me Kait. I’m a senior in high school and I love cookies. I also like breathing.

I’m homeschooled and I’m an intern for a recently launched homeschool website to help out interested to-be homeschoolers through their highschool years (letshomeschoolhighschool.com). I love hanging out with my friends and doing crazy stuff with them. Random pizza parties after our boys win a basketball game are the best. (Yes, I am talking about homeschoolers, in case you were confused.)

Writing novels is a career choice I made several years ago when I was thirteen, but my biggest dream is to be a domestic engineer (A.K.A. stay-at-home mom and housewife). I’m a Texan. Yeah, that nearly says it all.
