Tell us about Blue Straggler
Think of it as a Texas version of Bridget Jones’ Diary, only with a bit more depth and pathos. It’s about a young woman about to turn 30 who is struggling with life, relationships, vodka, Cool Whip, that sort of thing. She ends up heading out of Texas on a journey to learn about some old family secrets and ends up learning a lot about herself in a quirky Colorado mountain town. It’s a fun book!

What genre is it?
Contemporary fiction/women’s fiction. Blue Straggler would likely fall into that whole “chick lit” category. It has become an Amazon bestseller in comic fiction.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Blue Straggler will definitely appeal most to 20-somethings and
30-somethings – or anyone who is trying to figure out where they
belong in this world.

Have you written any other books that we should look out for?
A Good Kind of Knowing is a more serious work, more
along the lines of Hope Floats or Terms of Endearment. It’s set in a
small town in Texas and tells the story of a gypsy-like woman who owns a music store in the town. It explores the concept of community, and how all of these disparate characters have just one thing in common: a love of music and this music store. I’ve been told it reminds readers of one of Barbara Kingsolver‘s early works, which is high praise – and I’ll take it!

A Good Kind of Knowing, I think, appeals to a slightly older demographic than Blue Straggler.

I also have a children’s book coming out later this year titled, Higgenbloom and the Dancing Grandmas.

Looks like you’ve got all ages covered! Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a Texas girl, raised in a ranching family, who, much like the character in Blue Straggler, left home to find herself and ended up in a log cabin in the Colorado mountains. And I’ve been here 11 years now. I’m married, have an awesome 6-year-old son, and two untrainable furry hoodlums (golden retriever mixes).

Do you have a website where we can keep up with your work?
Yes! Thanks for asking. It’s kathylynnharris.com – I also blog on that site. My blog is called “You Can Take the Girl Out of Texas, but …” It’s fun stuff.

Do you use social media?
@KathyLynnHarris on Twitter (where I’m way more snarky) and www.facebook.com/BlueStragglerFiction on Facebook, where I try to be nice because my mother’s friends are on there.

What’s next?
I’m working on my third novel right now and I’m also working on an anthology of stories that explore the relationship between women and their dogs for Dog Moms Rock. If other writers are interested in submitting a story for that, they can email me at kathy@kathylynnharris.com. Thanks!
