Tell us about Depth of Exposure.

Sarah King is a war photographer – a young woman determined to succeed in a man’s world. Desperate to emerge from the shadow of her famous godfather and forge her own path she heads to war-torn Afghanistan seeking the shot that will make her solo career. What she finds is a whole lot of trouble.

SAS team leader, Rob Sanders is on a covert Black Op. Professional, cold-hearted and ruthless, the last thing he would normally do is come to the aid of a damsel in distress but when Sarah’s perilous situation threatens to compromise the mission, he has little choice. His intervention sets in motion a train of events which puts both of their lives on the line and jeopardises the mission, his team and everything he’s ever worked for. But the repercussions extend way beyond him and Sarah to the wider conflict, impacting on the lives of the ordinary soldiers battling under harsh and dangerous conditions in one of the most hostile environments on earth…

Depth of Exposure is a tale of adventure, misadventure, love, loyalty and sacrifice set in the heart of the modern-day Afghan conflict.

What genre is it?

Action/Adventure.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?

Readers who enjoy a fast-paced action adventure with realism, strong characters and twisting plot-lines.

How long did it take to write?

2 years.

What was the most challenging part of your creative process?

To be honest, I’ve loved it all! But there have been two major challenges. The first was to balance a full-on action adventure story with deep characters and a strong human element. I wanted to give a more realistic experience for readers than the average action adventure writer, but at the same time provide all the usual adrenaline.

The second was learning to write! Although I’d always enjoyed writing for pleasure, producing something of a high commercial standard is a different matter. I’ve had no formal training and so had to become my own harshest critic. Other Indie authors have been very helpful and I’ve also had some very good and honest friends who have given me tough critiques! You have to have very broad shoulders to be a writer at all, let alone an Indie.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m married to an ex-soldier and have two lovely children. I live in the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands on a farm and have horses. My “day job” is as a horse riding instructor but my long term aim is to be a full time writer.

Through Depth of Exposure, I’ve met some very interesting people from the Military including Special Forces and I’m now working as a practitioner with Talking2Minds, a Military Charity helping transform the lives of people suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Their groundbreaking programme works at a deep psychological level to root out the cause of this debilitating mental illness and has a 97% success rate. I’ve been so impressed with what they do that I’m donating 30% of the proceeds of Depth of Exposure.

Have you got a blog where readers can keep up with your work?

Yes, www.alexjamesauthor.com. I am also on Twitter and Facebook.

Where can we buy Depth of Exposure?

From Amazon.

What’s next?

Next is the sequel, Depth of Distortion, which is due out in November.
