Tell us about A City of Secrets. What’s it about?
As the daughter of a local fisherman, Kyna is used to boats of all types coming into Edgedock, but even she is amazed at the size of the ship that comes from the mysterious island of Baile. Under a string of strange circumstances, Kyna finds herself aboard The Governor’s Pride along with two runaways, heading for the ancient city of Osra. Little do they know that at the end of their voyage they will encounter greedy lords, a torn kingdom and a forgotten legend that will change their course forever.

‘A City of Secrets’ is the first part of ‘The Island Trinity’.

What genre is it?
Fantasy, fiction, young adult, adventure.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Anybody who likes to escape into magic and make-believe, to get away from ‘normal’ life. So far I have had good reviews from women but I’ve heard positive things from male readers too. Although the book is primarily aimed at young adults, people of all ages are currently reading it!

What other books is it similar to, would you say?
Narnia, Harry Potter, Garth Nix, the Wind on Fire trilogy, His Dark Materials.

How would you like the reader to feel as they read the last word of your book?
As the book is the first part in a series, I’m hoping that they’ll be hooked and looking forward to the next instalment! I love books that keep you guessing and have good cliffhangers; I’ve tried to include as much of this as possible. I would also love for there to be at least one character that the reader can identify with and watch out for; it makes for a personal, familiar feel and gives the reader a better connection with what’s going on.

Have you written any other books?
As I’ve been writing since a young age, I’ve had lots of ideas that I’ve fiddled with. Some of these haven’t gone anywhere, some are in the book released today and some have merged together! I have over ten that are part-written because of school/university/family life cutting up my time, but nothing publishable yet.

What’s next?
The main job at the moment is to complete the current series; then who knows? Like I said, I have lots of other ideas up in the air. Hopefully I’ll be able to bring some of them to life in the not-too-distant future.
