Interview with Julie Elizabeth Powell, author of Gone

Tell us about Gone.
Gone is a fantasy, written in answer to a question that haunted me during the waiting years between my daughter’s first and second deaths.  When she was two, her heart stopped and she died, unfortunately, she was revived too long and too late resulting in severe brain damage.  Samantha, therefore, had vanished, wiped clean of who she had been, never to know life except for suffering, never to know me or her family ever again.

That haunting question:  Where had my daughter gone?  Because although her body was still ‘alive’, her essence had disappeared – so I created Avalon and went in search of her.

Gone tackles many issues surrounding living death, death, loss, grief and hope in a unique way and forces ‘Charley’ to face all those tangled emotions, which I think would help others too.

Gone is a possible answer – some may say impossible.

What genre is it?
Fantasy.  It had to be because of the subject matter.  Although inspired by truth, only fantasy would pave the way to the answer.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Readers who favour stories that will make them think.  Those too that enjoy fantasy, myth, fairy tales as well as seeing how nothing is impossible if only we follow the imagination.

Complete this sentence for us: if you like _________________, you’ll love Gone.
If you like enchanting your heart, you’ll love my book.

How would you like the reader to feel as they read the last word of Gone?
Hope.  That anything is possible and that everyone could see the miraculous wonder that surrounds them everyday, if they only take the time to look, despite the sorrow, which can sometimes stem the flow of magic within the soul.

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
Yes.  Slings & Arrows is the non-fictional account of that waiting time.

The Star Realm (#1 Avalon Trilogy) whereupon I built and extended the world I’d created in Gone to write an epic fantasy adventure for 11+…Invasion #2 and #3 Secrets Of The Ice are also available.  I say 11+ but I love these kinds of stories – adding an age group is not accurate, as we are all different.

Here are my other titles:

Of Sound Mind – fantasy
Lost Shadows – psychological thriller /fantasy
13 – horror
Misadventures Of Fatwoman – humour
A Murderer’s Heart – murder mystery
Figments – short stories /poems
Knowing Jack (11+) mystery adventure

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Hello everyone. If you haven’t guessed by now I have a yen for words and have twelve books published…all thanks to Lulu, Kindle and other POD /ebook publishers, much hard work and sleepless nights.

My eldest daughter has flown the nest and is married to a man who doesn’t mind his mother-in-law, although my son is still fluffing his feathers.

My middle child is off on a mysterious adventure, the like of which can only guess…and tried to do so in Gone.

I love to read and am looking for ways to double time so to indulge in the mysterious and wonderful and delicious and strange…my favourite kind of story.

Writing is my passion, though I enjoy creating handcrafted cards, jewellery making, scrapbooking and dabbling in encaustic art whenever I can.

Oh yes, I used to teach or mark exam papers but now concentrate on writing and enjoying my new life, which materialised, as if by a miracle. Though still dislike all those necessary domestic chores that would, for me, be included in the Rings of Hell!

I am British and live in the UK.

That’s it. Thank you to anyone who reads my books…enjoy the flight!

Note:  I’m not one for rules, which frequently gets me into trouble and I sometimes feel I’m an alien, as I’ve never fitted into any pigeonhole.

What’s next?
I am currently working on three books – a murder mystery, a romance with a twist and a ‘how to’ humour.  Although I do like to mix genres to challenge my writing ability.  Hence the variety of genres so far and the fact that not all my books can be categorised easily.
