Interview with Douglas Dorow, author of The Ninth District

image

Tell us about The Ninth District.
The Ninth District is the first in a series with FBI Special Agent Jack Miller, who is based out of the Minneapolis field office.

The Federal Reserve has never been robbed. Special Agent Jack Miller and a newer agent, Ross Fruen, find themselves chasing down a bank robber, whose ultimate target turns out to be The Ninth District Federal Reserve which sits on along the Mississippi in Minneapolis.

What genre is it?
Thriller / Suspense / Police Procedural

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Readers who like non-stop action following the main hero, in this story it is FBI Special Agent Jack Miller.

Jack Miller is a strong, complex character. Will we be seeing more of him?
Yes, the second book in the series follows Jack and his family as they go on vacation in the Minnesota lake country. All he wants is some down time with his family, sun and fishing, instead he finds himself in the middle of taking on a local crime family.

Complete this sentence for us: If you like___________________, you’ll love The Ninth District.
Michael Connelly or John Sandford

Writing a book is never easy, but other than that, what has been the toughest part – editing or marketing?
Writing is the hardest part. I initially edit by myself and with the help of a critique group I’ve been meeting with for years, before I send the manuscript off to a professional editor.  Marketing is the next hardest part, finding and connecting with readers is tough to do as an independent author.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Writing is my second job. During the day, I’m an information technology manager. I live in Minneapolis with my family. I often find time to write at night after everyone has gone to bed or in coffee shops while my son is at soccer or hockey practice.

Have you got a blog where readers can keep up with your work?
I have a blog or people can sign up for my newsletter.  I’m also on Facebook   and Twitter as @DougDorow.

You interview other authors for your blog. Readers often imagine that writing is solitary work; is it useful to have all these connections with other novelists?
Writing is solitary work, but I can’t imagine not having connections with other writers. I first built connections by forming a local critique group that I’ve met with for many years. In the past couple of years, I’ve formed so many new connections with writers around the world via twitter and consider many of these tweeps, my friends. It’s great to be able to touch base with other writers, share ideas, ask for feedback on ideas for stories or covers, or just to see how things are going.

Where can we buy The Ninth District?
It is available on Amazon and from Barnes and Noble.

What’s next?
With THE NINTH DISTRICT I’ve released it as an ebook, paperback and audiobook. By Christmas I hope to have the Spanish version published and by next spring, German.

I have two current works in progress; the first is a novella, which is a spin-off thriller/action series following the secondary character from THE NINTH DISTRICT, Special Agent Ross Fruen, after he joins the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team and they deploy to handle various threats.  The second, is the the next in the series following THE NINTH DISTRICT.

Keeping the ideas at bay is the hard part as I focus on completing these two books.

I’ve started research on a new novel, a domestic adventure, along the lines of a James Rollins thriller.
