Interview with Eden Baylee, author of Spring into Summer

Spring into Summer is my second book of erotic novellas, containing two stories in spring and two in the summer. Though common elements unify them, each is unique and stands alone.

Poets inspired the first two stories. “A Season for Everything” follows a young woman in London, whose life is forever changed when she meets an older professor. “Unlocking the Mystery” is a rarity among erotica as there is no sex, and yet, it’s a passionate tale, which takes place partly in Dublin.

The stories of summer are fueled by heat, starting with “Summer Solstice.” Fire and pagan rituals play strong roles, and this story is definitely hot! Finally, “The Lottery” is a deeply, personal story about sacrifice and friendship in the beautiful country of Thailand.

Is it a particular type of erotica?
It’s literary erotica.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Though I would’ve thought my books appealed to women more than men, I’ve been surprised by the number of men who’ve reviewed my work, so I’m not sure there’s a distinction between the sexes. Many more men now read erotic literature.

Ultimately, my readers love a great story with believable characters, told in a way that touches their senses. Erotica is not just pounding sexual images into readers’ minds. It’s very much a character-driven genre that invites the reader into a sensual world of its characters. If you like to feel massaged by words, hear great music, or taste a full-bodied glass of wine, then you will enjoy my stories.

That’s a nice way to put it. This is your second collection of erotic novellas, right?

Yes, Fall into Winter was my first release, using the colder months as the backdrop for the stories.

The themes include: younger man, older woman; ménage à trois (MFM); past lovers; and second chance at love. It’s a diverse collection, much more raw in language than Spring into Summer.

Complete this sentence: If you like the styles of ___________, then you’ll love Spring Into Summer and Fall Into Winter.

Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, and Pauline Réage

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a full-time writer after leaving a twenty-year banking career. One of my favorite things is travel, and that’s why my stories take place all over the world.

I speak multiple languages, including French, German, and two dialects of Chinese. Languages and immersing myself in different cultures is another one of my favorite things.

Do you have a website where we can keep up with your work?
Yes, you can find me at www.edenbaylee.com.

What’s next?
I’m changing genres and writing a psychological erotic thriller combining the styles of John Fowles/Charles Bukowski/Haruki Murakami and a dash of Pauline Réage.

It’s scheduled to be completed by the end of 2013.

You write poetry too, don’t you? Any chance of a short poem or a verse that is indicative of your style?
Yes, I write poetry on occasion as a way of forcing my mind to arrange words differently. I published some of them with other short stories in a collection called Hot Flash.

As for a poem, here’s one called “Sleep Eludes Me.” It’s included in Hot Flash, and I wrote it after a sleepless night. Hope you enjoy it.

Lustful thoughts
Swirl inside my head
Like a gang swarms its victim
Circling
Before an attack

I lie in bed
Waiting to be still
But my mind races forward
Changing scenes
Like frames in a film

My body yearns for rest
A voice cries out “No!”
It steals my attention
Demanding gratification
Carnal satisfaction

I interrupt your dreams
Massage you awake
Hold you firmly in my hand
Quietly
I climb on top and lock you in

I’ll be your mystery lover
Your fantasy girl
Let me ride you
To satisfy me
No need to open your eyes
