Interview with Garrett Addison, author of The Traveller

The Traveller is not your typical novel.  It’s a story seen through the eyes of a repressed, travelling consultant struggling in pursuit of a work/life balance at the whims of his heartless, abusive boss.  But on this trip he is a world apart from his usual self.  Suddenly confident, capable and unafraid of his manager, reclaiming his life becomes less about corporate advancement and satisfying his ego than outright revenge on his boss.  With nothing but success in his wake and seemingly limitless potential at his disposal, being coerced to work with his nemesis in a remote corner of the world provides the opportunity for not just a confrontation, but a final solution to what he sees as the bane of his life.  Succeed or fail, either way this trip will be the making of him or the end of him.

Sometimes to get the measure of your life you just need a break from being yourself… because nothing lasts forever.

What genre is this book?
It doesn’t really slot neatly into any genre.  Part revenge, part adventure… but all good fun.

In that case, what kind of readers will it appeal to?
Most importantly it needs a reader to brace themselves for a book which isn’t any of their usual genres.

That said, there’s twists-a-plenty, travel, sex, power, revenge, regret, and redemption, all in a light (but sometimes ‘dark’) enjoyable read with a delicious thread of revenge and self discovery.

In particular, anyone who’s ever travelled with work, hated their boss, struggled with a work/life balance, wanted revenge on someone , or wanted a walk on the dark side will get an extra chuckle.

Tell us a bit more about your main character.
The most obvious thing about the main character is that the reader never knows his name, and the funny thing is that it doesn’t matter.  He’s angry and struggling, but after years of professional and personal abuse from his boss he lacks the courage and self esteem to do anything about it.  So when opportunity knocks, he embraces it with gusto.  He knows his amazing metamorphosis won’t last forever but he decides to exploit it for all it’s worth.

Similarly, the reader also never knows the name of the loathsome boss, other than such less than endearing titles as ‘Stalin’ and ‘the bitch’.  Seen through the eyes of the main character, she’s abusive, heartless, demeaning and deserving of some revenge.

No name? We’ve heard that that’s a ploy writers use. It means it’s autobiographical, right?
I hope not!  The main character heads down a dark path as he loses himself and is really a bit of a bastard.  But I have done a fair bit of work travel, so I definitely have first hand experience of what amounts to the premise of the book.

It’s funny how if I’d written a book about a serial killer, no-one, I hope, would assume I’m a serial killer myself. But writing about an adulterous, angry, failing guy and there’s an inclination to think it’ must’ be a personal account.

We take it you haven’t written any books about serial killers, then. Have you written any other books?
The Traveller‘ is my second novel.  My first, ‘Minions’ is a dark, broody mystery/thriller.  It’s a good read with some interesting characters, but it’s a world apart from ‘The Traveller‘.

We know not to ask if that means you’re secretly a minion! Going back to The Traveller, complete this sentence for us: if you like _________________, you’ll love this book.
If you like stories of revenge or good-guys-gone-bad, you’ll love my book.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m forty something, Australian, and also a geek, husband, father and novelist. I grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and have been lucky enough to live in or visit most of Australia and much of the world. I now live in Melbourne with my family. I have been an Army officer, software consultant and author.

What’s next?
Book 3 will be a dark and angry story of hate and revenge and absolutely nothing like ‘The Traveller.  I’m working on it now, but I’m a ‘pantser’ making it up as I go.
