A young woman all alone in a tiny rural community and suffering from a mental illness is turned into a vampire by a handsome stranger. Soon she comes to realize she has been turned for a specific purpose and that her vampire existence may be short lived. Also the handsome stranger may not be as much of a stranger as she thought.

Facing her demons, along with new enemies, she must fight to save her own life and the life of her new clan.

What genre is it?
Fantasy, Horror, Romance

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Vampire lovers, fantasy readers, paranormal and urban romance lovers.

Who is this young woman that is turned into a vampire?
Rachel Landry is 24 years old and has been suffering from Psychotic Depression since she was a teenager. The stigma of having a mental illness and the death of her parents has driven her into reclusiveness in her little house in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  She spends her days sleeping and her nights trying to cope with hearing voices. On the night the handsome stranger knocks on her door and takes her into the woods she finds out that she is not really hearing voices at all. She has a gift of distance and mental hearing, meaning that she can not only hear over long distances, but she can read minds as well.

Tell us about the vampire who turns her.
Gavin MacDonald is a vampire who was turned against his will by his father under emergency circumstances. He did not however possess the right temperament for it and thus ran wild for a long time, ignoring the killing rules of the Soldiers Cove clan. Finally he goes too far and they threaten to put him into a death sleep so he can’t hurt anyone anymore. He wanders into the woods and finds Rachel, who has been injured and is suffering from hallucinations.  He feeds from her without killing for the first time and falls in love, vowing to protect her and be with her always.

There’s an endless range of vampire tales out there; is there any that you would say is similar to The Vampires of Soldiers Cove?
If you like the Sookie Stackhouse novels, you’ll love my book.

How would you like the reader to feel as they read the last word of your book?
I had one reviewer say their heart broke when there were no more pages to read. I think that’s the greatest compliment ever. If the reader feels like they are sad to be leaving the world you created and wishes they could jump into your book and live there you’ve done your job.

But readers shouldn’t despair, right? You’ll be returning to this world.
The Vampires of Soldiers Cove is the first in a four part series. Book two called, One Crow Sorrow will be out in September, 2013.

Great title, by the way – The Vampires of Soldiers Cove.
Soldiers Cove is a real place in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and is the place I grew up. I wanted a place that would convey great isolation and loneliness, and Soldiers Cove with a population of less than one hundred people is certainly isolated. It is also beautiful and I spent many hours as a child wandering through the woods there. It’s as close to stepping into a fantasy book as one can get, it’s otherworldly.

Tell us more about yourself.
I am 38 years old, married with two children and live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. I have been writing all my life and I love to read and to entertain people.
