Interview with Michele Mene, author of London, I Confess… I’m That Girl
This book is about a Texan girl, creatively, named Tex after she moves to London to gain a postgraduate degree. During her time in London, Tex was quite certain she would be able to fulfill her Pride & Prejudice fantasy while earning her degree, be it Jane or Elizabeth. However, she did not expect to encounter so many gentlemen with the personality of Mr Collins. Yet, that is what can happen when a lady decides to venture into the online ballroom. Then there were the interesting characters met when walking down the street or on the tube. This of course could be what some people considered typical London, but then people from a certain gentleman’s school began to take notice of her in a way that would amuse Miss Bingley. It really was not Tex’s fault she could equate part of her personality to a character from Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Unfortunately, the character was Mr Rochester’s wife. Luckily, Tex found the time to resemble the rest of the Bennet sisters. What genre is it? What kind of readers will it appeal to? This story may also appeal to persons who have gone through difficult situations with bullying. I wrote this story to let those persons know that they aren’t alone, and that a negative situation can become positive. Tell us about Tex. Sorry, I really don’t want to give too much away concerning the characters she meets. We understand. What’s the story behind your book’s title? Tell us a bit about yourself. London, I Confess… I’m That Girl is actually based upon my experience in London while earning another postgraduate degree to be a speech therapist. It was written because my friends repeatedly suggested that I put my story into writing. I did not wish for my book to just be telling my experiences, and so have used a lot of references from two writers who have inspired me: Jane Austen & Charlotte Bronte. Apart from living in London, I grew-up in Texas, playing soccer, swimming, and being a bratty little sister. My friends know me as that crazy, random girl, who has the ability to meet characters wherever she goes. For my part, I really don’t mind since it is people who inspire my writing, and without knowing a variety of people and living a variety of experiences, I think writing will become stagnant.
