Interview with RMF Brown, author of The Painter of Guernica

It’s called ‘The Painter of Guernica,’ and it’s set during the Spanish Civil War.

It’s a tale of an artist trying to find redemption and re-connect with his family. Unfortunately for the artist, he supports one side, whilst his father supports the other, so the potential for conflict is there.

It’s a blend of art history, war, and the devastation a civil war can have on a country – tearing families apart, death and destruction etc.

Has the story got anything to do with Picasso’s Guernica?
Guernica, by Pablo Picasso, is a famous painting, inspired by the infamous bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. As my book is set during that period, and the fact that the main character witnesses it, made it a logical choice for the book’s title.

Ah okay. What genre is your book?
It’s a historical novel, with a strong claim to the literary fiction genre. I’ve no idea what literary fiction is, but I’ve been reliably informed that this book fits into that genre!

At least you can tell us which readers it will appeal to.
It will appeal to people who enjoy art (this book has many references to famous painters and paintings that erudite readers will recognise) and it will appeal to those who enjoy classic themes of love and betrayal.

Tell us a little about your main character.
The main character is a renowned artist, but he has his problems. His father hates him, and he feels guilty for surpassing the achievements of his former master, and the rift that developed between them. So there is a strong sense of father-son relationships here, but the main character is unsure of who his ‘father’ really is – his biological father, or his former art master.

We’ve interviewed you twice in the past, for Death To Love and A Rat’s War. For anyone who hasn’t yet read those interviews, tell us about yourself.
I haven’t changed much from my last interview (except round the waist) but I’m still plugging away with the writing. It’s hard work, but it’s good fun.

I’m your typical, white, geeky, star trek loving nerd, who should really get a real job!
