Interview with Tom Evans, author of This We Know

Tell us about This We Know.
This We Know is a book I had simply no intention to write. I was on holiday and was watching my life partner snoozing on the sofa. I wondered at that moment how many other people were asleep right at that time and how many would be dreaming. The next day I wrote what I thought would be a blog on that idea. This was the 3rd September.
The next day I wrote a second blog on how many people were born and died each day. Then the floodgates opened and I could not stop writing each morning.
When I came back from holiday I was running a workshop on creativity for some journalists so thought it would be a good case study to show how you could write and publish something in less than a month. So I did. The print copies arrived on the 20th September. I published it for the Kindle the day after.
What I wasn’t expecting was the reviews that started coming in…

What genre is it?
Non-fiction and specifically philosophy, self-help and personal transformation and development.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Those people who are curious about how we got here and where we are going as a species. Change-makers, entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs and ultrapreneurs who don’t take things for granted. Readers with an open mind who would like it to be opened some more.

Considering the breadth of the subject you are addressing, how were you able to make This We Know so short?
I write using hypnotic language structures which allow incredibly dense sentences. So not many words to cover a lot of content. Often, a phrase might have two or more meanings and need two or more readings as a result. Readers these days don’t have as much time (although my course Bending Time can change that) so small is beautiful. There may well be a sequel too.

What would you say if someone were to challenge you and ask what qualifies you to write this book?
This book is about humanity and what it means to be human. When I looked in the mirror this morning, I looked like I was mostly human. I am therefore as qualified as any one of the other 7 billion or so humans to write about Us !!
I have also been studying arcane, esoteric wisdom for over 10 years which contains many clues as to our true nature. Making the esoteric into the exoteric is my passion and now my core expertise. I am both a student of physics and metaphysics. With a foot in both camps, I find myself able to ‘translate’.

Many visitors to this site are authors themselves. I imagine they would be interested in your book Blocks.
Blocks is a book I wrote also in just two weeks too. Although I had researched it by working with clients and running workshops for a couple of years so I knew the content and exercises worked.
I figured that if someone has writer’s block, they wouldn’t want to read a big book so it is purposely short. It comes with six guided audio visualisations though to augment and expand the book’s content. It too is based on esoteric wisdom but translated into a real world context and solution.

Writing a book is never easy, but other than that, what has been the toughest part – editing or marketing?
For me, as I am naturally shy and modest, the marketing of my books is the area I am weakest on.

What would you say is the one most important thing people need to know or do to live a fulfilled life?
What people need to know is that every single person on the planet is important and needed. Everyone has a place, a value and a purpose.
What each of us needs to do is to learn, to grow, to share and most importantly to love. This love too must start with self-love (not narcissism), from there we develop unlimited capacity to love others too.

Tell us a bit more about yourself.
I am one of seven children and from Manchester in the UK. I now live in the Surrey Hills with my life partner and a writer’s best friends, two dogs who will go walking at the drop of a hat.
I have an honours degree in Electronics and started my career as a broadcast engineer at the BBC. By the time I was 33, I had built and sold my own broadcast manufacturing business. By 40, I had built a second business in Internet technology.
At 45, I got bored with corporate life and thought there had to be something more to life. On holiday I wrote a book of poetry called 100 Years of Ermintrude and before I knew it, a new career as an author’s mentor and writer’s unblocker arrives. I did not and could not have planned it.
At nearly 55, I now love the work I do so don’t consider it work as such. I find myself acting in a multiplicity of roles such as a healer, inspirer, sage, author’s mentor, writer’s unblocker and business catalyst. People also call me the wizard of light bulb moments.

Have you got a site where readers can keep up with your work?
To find me, go to www.tomevans.co
And there is a free audio visualisation to accompany This We Know called Being 999 which people can get here
http://www.tomevans.co/books/this-we-know
Finally, I’m running a competition in which a reader can win a free Kindle. Details of that can be found here.

I also have a This We Know Fan Page on Facebook where I share new ‘knowings’ as they arrive. I am keen to interview others too about what they know, don’t know and would like to know.

Where can we buy This We Know?
It is available in print and for all ereaders.
First point of call would be Amazon – UKUSA

What’s next?
Before I even started writing This We Know, I’d finished what I thought was this year’s book called Planes of Being : Towards the Merged Mind. It lifts the lid on the true meaning of the Minor Arcana of the Tarot. Note it is not a deck simply for fortune telling. It is the sequel to my book Flavours of Thought which did the same for the Major Arcana.
I’ve just finished the final edit so will be launching and promoting this book too.
