Interview with S. M. Coan, author of Innerearth

It all began as a challenge from my high school astronomy teacher. We would spend a few after-class minutes discussing everything from UFOs to missing persons to paranormal experiences. Near the end of the semester, he presented me with said challenge – “why not try to explain all of these using one basic premise?”

Thus the basic outline of ‘Innerearth‘ was formed.

And what is Innerearth?
Innerearth is a place, of sorts. Rather, it is a personification of a living, thinking Earth, a planet still young and learning, and simply trying to survive.

What’s the story?
Christian W. Falconer was perfectly content in his life as a 34-year-old surveyor working in Oklahoma. He had, however, a feeling that many things about his life seemed vague and didn’t quite add up. This was confirmed when a small group of Pentagon employees, members of The Red File Council, show up at his work place one day and present Chris with another resume of his life. In this version of his life he is a 39-year-old former F-16 pilot who was lost over the Atlantic during a top-secret testing exercise.

He is tenacious but open-minded, and he works with the Council to ‘get to the bottom’ of the mystery and hopefully rid himself of the vivid dreams that often trouble him.

What genre is it?
Science Fiction / Fantasy but written much like a mystery.

Complete this sentence for us: if you like _________________, you’ll love my book.
an intelligent, character-driven yarn

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I have written, illustrated and published a children’s book entitled ‘Crawlspace Charlie’. But I have outlined and written six first-draft chapters of the follow-up to ‘Innerearth’ which will be entitled ‘The Thought Thieves’.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am an artist, illustrator and graphic designer living in the foothills west of Denver, Colorado. I am 53 years old and have been married for 30 years. I have always written, mostly short stories, but decided to take on ‘Innereath’ in 1999. I finished the manuscript in 2001 and tried the usual publisher queries. I received one letter of interest, but didn’t make the slot at that time. With the e-book self-publishing, I knew it was time to bring it out again.

Do you have a website where we can keep up with your work?
I don’t have one at present.

How can we follow you on Twitter and/or Facebook?

What’s next?
As stated above, I am working to finish ‘The Thought Thieves’ so those who’ve enjoyed ‘Innerearth’ can continue on that journey. I have several other full novel outlines including ‘Trailer Trash’ (a comic romp), ‘Possessions’, a strange take on a haunted house story, and a collection “Longhand and Short Stories’.
