Interview with Amy Michelle Mosier, author of Midnight Guests and Other Weird Stories

Inspired by Twilight Zone, Midnight Guests and Other Weird Stories is a collection of 13 short stories of much variety. There are ghosts and monsters of my own making. In a couple of them, the monsters are us – that is, humans because of the way we sometimes act monstrous to each other. The longest story and opus magnus of the book is “The Wind in the Hollow” and I leave the reader (hopefully) guessing about who the real villain is.

Ghosts, monsters, villains – we’re firmly in the territory of horror fiction, right?
Not quite horror, it’s more like weird fiction. Remember – I said it was inspired by Lovecraft. That should mean it’s entirely unpredictable.

Without the label of a genre, how will readers know if they’ll like it? Who do you think it’ll appeal to?
Anyone who loves a quirky read. Maybe it’ll appeal to those who are too scared to read true horror, they just want the subtle stuff. Otherwise, those that feel insulted by Meyer’s Twilight may appreciate it. At least, I assume my readers have over a 3rd grade reading level.

Ha ha, that’s fighting talk! Tell us about any of the characters in one of your stories.
My more memorable characters would include an Apache boy, Para-ah-dee-ah-tran. He is on the threshold of adulthood and he faces his fears for a (wait for it)… a woman.

And Peter and Fernando have a close friendship as kids, leisurely wasting away summers riding bikes and such.

And there’s a schizophrenic child named Margaret Forsythe who has six invisible friends. Forsythe sounds like such a naturally evil surname.

How would you like the reader to feel as they read the last word of your book?
Creeped out, I hope.

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I also have two poetry books, Envious of the Clouds and Water is Many.

Oh? Why poetry?
Because I’m crazy.

We won’t argue the point. Tell us more about yourself.
I was a prepper before people starting using that word. Ideally, I can survive in the desert. Some of my info is book knowledge but some of it I’ve had to put into practice. I don’t trust the US dollar anymore. I dabble in photography, poker, chocolate and movies.

Do you have a website where we can keep up with your work?
http://enviousoftheclouds.weebly.com/

How can we follow you on Twitter and/or Facebook?
@AmyMMosier

What’s next?
Oh, I definitely have something up my sleeve. It fits in that ambiguous genre called literary fiction. Because it’s a highly unique idea, I should keep it a secret. But for now, I’m on vacation between books and will resume my research on the Voynich Manuscript.
