Interview with Ceri London, author of Rogue Genesis

Rogue Genesis will catch your imagination, leave you on the edge of your chair, and then transport you to another world before bringing you back to Earth with a bump.

That’s when the real drama of heartbreak and hard choices takes off as treachery and torn loyalties clash with the demands of destiny, for Major Niall Kearey has a unique gift—his mind can travel the universe.

Time on Astereal, a planet where an alien civilization faces extinction as black holes rip it apart, passes faster than on Earth. They believe a man from across the stars will save them. But Niall thinks Astereal is no more than a childhood dream.

The bombshell drops when Niall attracts the attention of sinister forces on Earth forcing him to discover the full extent of his powers. He is the conduit for an alien invasion that could transform or destroy mankind, and Earth’s authorities are determined to stop him.

Sounds like this is science fiction, right?
Science fiction/fantasy crossing several other genres. Set on modern-day Earth, Rogue Genesis blends exciting military action adventure and political conspiracy within a technothriller, but metaphysical elements transport the reader to an alien civilization on a distant planet giving it an epic space opera feel.

We like the sound of that. Talk to us about Niall, though.
Major Niall Kearey is a trained medic in USAF Special Tactics. His career has been spent going deep into enemy territory to save lives. He’s happily married with two children. He also has a sixth instinct for danger and an uncanny ability to get out of trouble thanks to his mind’s ability to travel the universe. If that’s not superhuman enough, he has untapped powers waiting to be discovered.

His mistakes are very human. He’s spent a lifetime keeping his gifts secret from the world and has an ingrained loyalty to an alien civilization that sees Earth as its salvation. That puts him in conflict with his superiors and he finds it hard to know who to trust. The consequences of his innate secrecy tear his life apart, catapulting him onto a course that will test his loyalties, and his nerve.

This is a man who will fight tooth and nail for what he believes is right, but at his core is a hunger to get back his life and freedom, and the wife and children he adores.

Sounds like you admire him very much. Will we be seeing more of him in the future?
I am halfway through my sequel to Rogue Genesis. It’s at an exciting point as the plot heads into an exciting dramatic twist. Then follows a fast-paced build up to the climax where my long-suffering hero will discover a life-changing choice awaiting him.

I wrote Rogue Genesis as a standalone novel, but the sequel is very much part of the Shimmer in the Dark series. The ending will leave Niall in a new and scary place ready for epic scale adventures in the third book. I can’t wait to get back to writing it!

mindblowing rollercoaster madness and a military hero forced to go rogue

Tell us about yourself.
Real life is very normal. I married my wonderful husband in my early twenties and worked in IT project management for several years, writing as a hobby on and off. Now I am a mother to two beautiful daughters and tutor piano. A complete turn around, but it gives me the time to write and I do enjoy the teaching.

How easily do new storylines come to you? If we give you four random words – Man, Woman, Airport, Darkness – can you give us a brief storyline?
Man working in Passport Control finally spots his estranged girlfriend passing through the airport. Getting this job paid off. He knew she visited her family. It was just a matter of time. Now he’s found her they can disappear. He goes outside to wait for her. It’s dark and he knows all the airport’s blind spots. He confronts her and forces her into the trunk of his waiting car. That’s when she unbuttons her blouse revealing a wire. The triumphant gleam to her eyes warns him, but too late. As police descend upon them the man knows his fantasy is over.

Wow, we didn’t know you could have a twist in the tail of a story that’s only one paragraph long!
What’s next for you?
My Shimmer in the Dark series will keep me happily occupied for a good couple of years. I have a short story due to be published in an ASMSG anthology called ‘A World of Worlds’ in the New Year 2014. It develops a minor character from Rogue Genesis and forms part of the overall arc for the series Shimmer in the Dark. I also intend to publish Rogue Genesis in paperback when the sequel comes out. So look out for these!
