Time to Retire is a mystery/romance novel that offers a glimpse into the adventures of retirement living.

Things are not quite what they seem at Sunset Gardens, an active adult retirement community in California. The directors of the Homeowner’s Association has been handling money in questionable ways, there’s secret meetings occurring at The Silent Front, a former speakeasy, and an influential resident recently committed suicide. Reporter Willy Herbst, approaching retirement, is curious about what’s going on in the neighboring community “over the hill.” He and his eager intern, Sally Saginaw, team up to investigate. Their discoveries are surprising…

What genre is this?
Time to Retire is filled with mystery, romance, and adventure, as Willy and Sally explore the lifestyles of aging retirees.

Who will it appeal to?
Time to Retire appeals to seniors who are approaching or living in retirement, either on their own, or in a retirement community. The novel will also appeal to sons and daughters who are concerned about their parents living circumstances in their senior years. Time to Retire also appeals to Baby Boomers themselves who are approaching retirement and wondering where to live and how to live.

What do we need to know about your main characters, Willy and Sally?
Willy Herbst is a seasoned reporter who, himself, is nearing retirement. He welcomes the assignment to investigate a mysterious death in an active adult retirement community. The young intern who is assigned to work with him is taller, sharper and beautiful. A confirmed bachelor, Willy overcomes enough of his gender reticence to become interested in her both as a woman and a colleague. He yearns for a relationship with her.

We interviewed you recently about your other novel, Marcel Proust in Taos. For anyone who missed that tell us about it.
Marcel Proust in Taos tells the story of Christopher and Marlene, two recent immigrants to Taos, New Mexico, who fall in love with their adopted city and eventually each other. Christopher, a retired nuclear physicist, works on his first novel, while Marlene, newly arrived from Germany, spends her days painting the landscape and people around her. The two team up to open a microbrewery, and their relationship is tested by the hurdles they deal with along the way: Christopher hits a rough patch in his book, and a powerful enemy of Marlene’s threatens to destroy everything.

Christopher and Marlene find themselves confronting terrorism of a new sort with the matriarch of the Taos community, Agnes Havelock Powers, who strongly opposes having a brewery in town. Agnes is rich, powerful, and influential. She has the city authorities tucked in her purse next to her checkbook. Follow the exciting and charming love story of Marlene and Christopher in historical Taos, as they experience the challenges of confronting abusive power.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am 81 years old, an octogenarian prostate cancer survivor, a marathon runner (60 completed), hiker, and political columnist in a large active adult retirement community near San Francisco. My wife and I wrote together for 20 years until she passed away, and now I continue to write. Time to Retire is my 11th novel.
