Why you must read Dewayne Haslett’s Invincible

Invincible is a Young Adult Science Fiction novel about a teenage boy who suffers from amnesia, without any idea who he is, or why he’s in the corrupted city of Detroit, or how he got there. When he begins to possess strange abilities and a lethal enemy begins to pursue him, Troy must discover the secrets to his past and protect the ones he begin to love before it’s too late.

Troy? Tell us about him.
Troy is a very complex character. He’s an equal blend of strength and vulnerably, and is very insecure about himself and his place and the world, which for me, and all teenagers, can easily relate to. He also has a strong sense of what’s right and wrong, and is willing to die for the people he loves and the things he believes.

How much of yourself is in Troy?
Everything! Right down to the superpowers! No, I’m kidding. I think Troy is more who’d like to be as a person: he’s brave, stands up for himself and others, and also has the cool powers! The only real thing we actually have in common is that we both act on impulse rather than logic, though Troy probably has me beat in that department also.

Given a choice, what superpower would you have?
One that comes to mind would probably be super strength. I think it’d be pretty cool to balance a stack of five cars on hand. Yeah…sounds kinda awesome.

What kind of readers will this novel appeal to?
I think it will appeal to anyone who’s into comic books/superheroes, but I also hope it appeals to an even broader audience. There’s a lot of action, humor, and hey, even a little bit of romance.

And even though the story is told from a male’s perspective, his worries about becoming a grown-up and making the right decisions, I hope, can draw people of all ages and both genders.

Tell us about yourself.
Well, I’m 16 years old and live in Chicago, IL. I got the idea for Invincible at the age of 14, but I always been interested in storytelling since the age of 5.

What’s next?
I’m currently working on the second book in the series, which will hopefully be released in fall of 2014. Without giving too much away, the scope of Troy’s world and the people he cares for broadens. Other than that, you’ll have to wait and see.
