Why you must read Java Davis’ Commune

image

COMMUNE is the story of an apple commune in the fictional M’Coun County, Michigan.  An idealistic business MBA buys the apple farm with lottery winnings, and invites people to live there for free if they’ll work the land.  If the place ever turns a profit, there will be shares for everyone.

In a commune, like anywhere else, if you give something away for free, there will be people with their hands out, some who are honest enough to do a day’s work, and others who are happy to live off the labors of others, ones who are “not into work, man.”

Inevitably, personalities will conflict and opposites will collide.  Commune is about the people who converge on the commune and what happens to all of them in the long run.

So is this a comedy? A drama?
I can’t think of where it comfortably fits, so I’d like to call it “ensemble fiction.”

Anyone with a dry sense of humor, or who is cynical about life, will enjoy Commune.  But it also has pathos and some happy endings.

“Ensemble fiction”. We like that. Introduce us to the cast, if you will.
Momo has escaped her trailer park life with hard work and education.  She is just finishing business school when she wins the lottery.  She rejects the MBA philosophy and dreams of happy, healthy commune.  She buys the farm.

Maia, Momo’s right hand, is in hiding from her own demons.  She works like a mule and refuses to discuss her past.

Linda, a potter, decides to visit Momo and the commune as a vacation.  She gets roped into the politics and the drama of life on the commune.

Dan is the supplies delivery man.  With so many women coming and going at the farm, he is a serial dater, needing to work fast before they leave.

Ritchie is an organic vegetable farmer.  Dulcie is an embittered chef.

And yes, there are MORE!

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I have four other titles available.   Depression Carpenter, the story of a wealthy carpenter during The Great Depression, is available as an ebook from Amazon and also as an audiobook, narrated by the very talented Justin D. Torres.  On Becoming a Dinosaur, the short memoir of my years as a typesetter and the demise of that occupation, bowing to desktop publishing, is available as an ebook on Amazon and also an audiobook, narrated by me. Cowgirl is the story of two Jewish children, tossed out of their California community at the turn of the last century, who head east to Nevada for a new life, available as an ebook on Amazon.  Triptych harkens back to my years as a typesetter originally from New Jersey, and tells the story of Hannah, who travels from NJ to Phoenix, to take over a job managing a newspaper press room — a room full of men!  It’s available as an ebook from Amazon.

Tell us about yourself.
I spent about 15 years as a freelance typesetter doing type design, marketing and editing.  I am currently retired/disabled, working on my books at whatever crazy hours I choose.
