Why you must read Karolyn Cairns’ The Wanting

TheWanting
The Wanting is about a vampire prince who becomes fixated on a human girl, and inadvertently makes her a Halfling.

A Halfling? What’s that?
A Halfling is a blood slave, much like Igor, but way hotter and no bug-eating. Did I mention he did all this while walking in his sleep?

Tell us more. What happens next?
He can’t bear to kill her to release her from him. It’s forbidden to turn her with pure blood and make her vampire. Love proves to be a hidden catalyst and he’s forced to realize his own kind are a danger to her.

Making her a Highblood dooms her to be a fugitive to his kind, called the Nocturnae, a race of pure-blooded vampires who walk in daylight.

These highborn vampires are the ruling class who preside over the nightwalking vampires. Turning her with pure blood makes her a danger to them all.

This is obviously a paranormal romance, right?
This is a paranormal historical romance that begins in 1889 and spans a century into modern times.

I think the novel will appeal to those who like vampire romances and historical romances.

X-rated Twilight fantasies.

Ooh, so there’s sex in it? Great. In that case you’d better tell us about main character. She’s named Juliette, right?
Juliette is an orphan, never having known her parents. She works at a theatre as a seamstress in turn of the century London. She’s frightfully naïve and doesn’t see any of this coming for her. She is sure her dull, ordinary life will never change. Through the course of her accepting her new role in the prince’s life, she becomes more confidant in herself. She realizes how much she took for granted her former life.

Juliette is someone we can all relate to. She struggles with mediocrity, her own limitations. She sees nothing in her life will ever change. I think I channeled my own desire for change as an aspiring author, working a day job I hate, wishing for more.

So is this your first novel?
This book is my eleventh novel. I have two series and several other books, mostly paranormal romance and historical romance. My Viking romance is one of my bestselling novels. A Viking’s Love is available everywhere ebooks are sold. The Wicked Series and The Lost Tribe series are there too. My favorite is The Libertine’s Wife. I think it was exceptional in many ways.

You said something about working in a day job you hate.
I work in healthcare. I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I never worked up the nerve until I got into a very bad car crash. It forced me to realize you only have one chance to do what you always wanted in this life. I gave it a shot. Eleven novels later, I’m glad I did.

It’s very satisfying. Some of these stories have been doodled on cocktail napkins, my kids notebooks, and rattled around my brain for years. Bringing them to life is one of the most satisfying things I have ever done. I look forward to devoting myself to it fulltime one of these days. Fame isn’t a deal breaker. I love what I do without all the fuss.

I’m a single mother with twin teenage daughters, a cat and a dog.
