So who is this husband?
The Husband is a well mannered, attentive, deeply devoted man – a little formal, perhaps, a little old fashioned, but besotted with his wife and devoted to the home they have built together.

Del is a working class Londoner. He’s grown up on the rough side of the tracks, but he’s stayed straight, settled into a job, kept his head down and his nose clean. He’s good husband, a good father. But a promotion at work, followed by a sudden unwelcome pay cut, has left him dangerously overextended, and increasingly desperate for a way out, before he can no longer hide the red letters from his wife and his world comes tumbling down…

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I have a short story called ‘Reverse Engineering’ that’s out as part of a Science Fiction anthology called ‘Do Monkeys Dream of Electric Kettles?‘ that I’m very proud of.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I like being a husband and father. I enjoy rocking out with my band, The Disciples of Gonzo. I have long hair. I quit smoking ten years ago and still miss it.

What’s next?
In my super-immediate future, moving house. After that, take a scalpel to D1 of my first novel and see if I can get it into any kind of shape. Wish me luck.

How easily do new storylines come to you? If we give you four random words  – Man, Woman, Airport, Darkness – can you give us a brief storyline?
To be honest, I start with situations rather than stories. So with this exercise, I’d have to start with ‘What if a man and a woman meet at an airport? She acts like she knows him, he’s never seen her before, it gets uncomfortable and he goes to walk away, and just as she grabs his hand all the lights go out?’ I think that would give me a good place to start. Then it’s just a case of chasing the rabbit all the way down the hole and writing what I see when I get there. That’s the best bit.
