Why you must read JM Brink’s Stolen Time

Stolen Time is a fun, quick, space opera adventure. The villain would twirl his moustache, if he had one, while stroking a cat — again, incongruously absent.

An evil mad-scientist is sent to recruit some new scientists for Anerix, a planet which is NOT a dictatorship — says so right there in the brochures, and their High Chancellor’s diabolical plans. He happens upon the work of one young prodigy and rising star in physics and mathematics, Professor Serena Cole of the Sweytzian Alliance.

Serena’s newest theories hold the keys to intergalactic starcraft, but to Janoke Greenbriar they hold the key to his becoming a god, throwing off his service to his High Chancellor, and ruling all of creation. He feels, you see, it can be used to traverse time, itself.

In classic fashion, he’s less than polite in asking for Serena’s help. Kidnapping ensues, and the brave and daring freedom fighters for hire, Darrien’s Daggers, must rush to her rescue!

What genre is this?

Space opera.

That means a large cast of characters, right? Introduce us.

Doctor Janoke Greenbriar — foremost expert in biology and genetics, a member of Anerix’ High Command, and a none-too-nice fellow. He’s a villain, but he doesn’t really seem to realise this.

Professor Serena Cole — the young genius who has had enough of the Jartorin science conference, at which she’d been invited to give a lecture, and is ready to go home to her kitten, her fiancée, and her own bed. Instead she finds herself the captive of a man who has awful tastes in cologne, bad breath, and is threatening to have her fiancée killed if she doesn’t do as he wishes.

Georgia Blue-Evans — a sweet young dancer, Serena’s fiancée, and not one to be trifled with. She’s determined to get Serena back, in one piece, and to ensure that Greenbriar winds up in several very small bits in the most painful manner she can imagine.

Have you written any other novels?

Not yet. I’ve various related short stories and vignettes on my website. And my lovely wife and editor, Shannon, has written a couple of things in the setting.

Tell us about yourself.

Shy, opinionated, eccentric, hippie.

I spend my days working at my cable company trying to keep their phone systems working, I spend my nights playing with a menagerie of pets. Somewhere in there I manage to dream up races and worlds, and jot down little bits about them.

When I’m lucky I get to settle down and read a good book.

What’s next?

Working on a couple of Universal Nexus short story collections. Also working on piecing together a kind of slice of life story about a young Xentorn girl (one of the alien races in the setting), a novel about a space pirate, and a series of fairy stories about some children whom a trio of goddesses accidentally put in Fate and Destiny’s crosshairs.
