Eighteen-year old Jaycie Lerner’s telekinesis is finally in check – too bad levitating a picnic table is now a workout. Not to mention her previously dormant telepathy is back and raging out of control. As she struggles to manage her frightening power, the Dey-Vah announce they will soon reveal the supernatural world to the human race. To make matters worse, people start dropping dead all over northern Alabama. Then, a mysterious new enemy emerges.

Jaycie must elicit the help of the world’s only master vampire slayer and an assassin who converses with the voices in her head. Strengthening the Core is the only way to protect mankind from the coming vampire army, and that’s not even their most dangerous threat.

Jaycie and her family face their darkest hour when an innocent young girl serves as a pawn to form a deadly Alliance. The perfect vampire, Lilith Bradshaw, becomes an eye-opening example of how far the Alliance will go to serve their own destructive ends. The world around Jaycie plummets into darkness, and betrayals from the past threaten to undo them all.

What genre is it?
It’s YA/Fantasy/Paranormal. Technically it’s upper YA.

Reviewers say this series will particularly appeal to fans of The X-Men.
I think it will appeal to comic books fans and fans of the television series, Heroes. I think it will also appeal to fans of Jenny Pox by JL Bryan will enjoy this series.

This novel is the third in the series, so we’ve got some catching up to do with Jaycie. Tell us about her.
Jaycie Lerner is an African American seventeen year old country girl when you meet her in the first book. She also happens to be a telepath and just a little more than telekinetic. Her father, Mason is also telepathic. Her godfather, John holds the power of persuasion, and her trainer and live in mother figure is strong enough to level a planet. She’s also faster than The Flash. Not to mention her best friend, Haylee Mitchell has the power to sense evil. Jaycie’s boyfriend, Matt, while not superhuman, has flawless instincts.

The characters in Darwin’s Children are really fun to write. I think there is a character in this series everyone can relate to.

Who do you relate to?
I think the only personality trait Jaycie and I share is that we’re both sassy. No, scratch that, we’re both easily entertained.

That’s no bad thing. Tell us about yourself.
Well, I do some freelance writing and editing in addition to writing novels. I also teach at a local after-school program for kids that need help outside of school. I live in Alabama with my awesome six year old daughter. I have a wonderful boyfriend and I’m a complete comic book nerd.

How easily do new storylines come to you? If we give you four random words
– Man, Woman, Mexico, Future – can you give us a brief storyline?
Ooo, I like that question. Very unique and creative. Let’s see what I can do.

A man and a woman woke up in a cheap hotel in Mexico, which was weird for a few reasons. They were perfect strangers. They had thudding headaches that could only be credited with a hangover. And they were both U.S. citizens. The woman stared from the man, then back down at herself, relieved that her clothes were at least still on. Before she could ask him who the hell he was, the door shoots open, and a dark figure blurred toward them, slamming the door behind him.

“Get up,” a male says, reaching for the woman. She jerks away, and squints up at him. “Who are you?”

“I’m Future, ma’am. And you two are really screwing us over.”

Future forces them out of the hotel room and says something about how the man and woman are not supposed to have met yet, then he sends them back to the Past.

Thanks Natasha. Great interview. Is there anything we forgot to ask?
No, I think you guys covered everything. Oh, wait. You didn’t ask if I was afraid of ostriches.

I am.
