Interview with Kenneth Hoss, author of the Kelli Storm series

Tell us about your Kelli Storm series of novels.

Kelli Storm is a Detective for the NYPD and works out of the 33rd Precinct in Washington Heights. The first book, Storm Rising, introduces Kelli and follows her and her partner as they investigate several seemingly unrelated murders. She and her partner find that these murders link to a Colombian drug cartel run by a ruthless drug lord.

Storm Warning picks up a few months after the end of Storm Rising and finds Kelli thrown back into the world of the drug cartels. Kelli doesn’t let anything get in her way when she goes after her nemesis, and she uses any means at her disposal to bring down the drug lord and his cartel.

What genre is it?

Crime thriller/Police Procedural.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?

Anyone who loves a fast-paced cop book.

The stereotypical fictional detective is male, does having a female lead allow you do different things with the genre?

Male detectives in fiction are overdone, at least in my opinion. I wanted to break out of that and show a strong female lead. Kelli is tough on the outside, but she is still a woman and as such, her emotions sometimes get the better of her. She is not weak by any standard, but she does let her feminine side show at the right moments.

What is the best thing about being a writer?

Someone once said, and I can’t recall who it was at this moment, that the best thing about being a writer is that you never have to worry about getting it wrong. You can always go back and edit.

What is the worst thing about being a writer?

The dreaded Writers Block. You know, when the voices in your head refuse to talk to you.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Other than loving to write, I have a day job as a Lotus Notes Administrator, among other IT work, for a mid-sized company here in the Dallas area. My dream of course is to eventually earn enough from writing so that I don’t have to work a day job.

I spent 14 years in the US Military, between the Army and the Navy, which allowed me to travel extensively and see places most people only dream of seeing. After leaving the Navy, I joined a small Police Force in Southern California, but circumstances beyond my control forced me to resign after just two years. I already had a penchant for PC’s and so it seemed like a natural choice to become an IT Technician.

You are quite vocal in promoting independent writing and writers.

Being an Indie author, I know how tough it is to get the word out about your books, so it just seemed the right thing to do. The more I can do to get the word out about another author’s work, the better informed the general public becomes, and in turn, buy more Indie books. I don’t see the BIG houses going anywhere, but I do know that Indie’s are here to stay and the BIG boys are going to have to learn to deal with it.

Do you have a site where readers can keep up with your work?

Yes, I have a blog that I started over a year ago now.

Where can people buy your books?

Both of my books are now exclusive to Amazon, which means that Prime members can download them at no cost.

What’s next?

I still have at least one more book for Kelli, which I hope to release by Fall 2013.
