Why you must read James Young’s An Unproven Concept

Set in 3050, An Unproven Concept follows the crew of the battlecruiser Constitution and the passengers of the starliner Titanic as they are forced to fight with opponents both within the Confederation of Man and external to it (a.k.a., aliens).

This is science fiction, right?
Space Opera Science Fiction. This is another way of saying that I’m bad at physics and hard science, so if you’re breaking out a slide rule to check my math you’re going to be disappointed.

An Unproven Concept is what would happen if Robotech and Battlestar Galactica met, got married, and had a baby…that was raised in a George R.R. Martin-themed playground.

Great description.
Introduce us to the cast of characters.
The book mainly revolves around three main characters:

Mackenzie William Bolan–A decorated captain, Bolan is a man who has a controversial past and uncertain future. He’s been given a seemingly no-win proposition in that he must take the Constitution (the concept in the book’s title) and convince the rest of the Fleet that his vessel’s configuration is the way of the future.

Jason Owderkirk–A well-regarded fighter jockey who serves as the Constitution’s CAG, Owderkirk is one of the vessel’s initial doubters. In addition to the stressors of his job, he’s also forced to consider how his actions will affect Andrea Owderkirk, his wife’s, career.

Marcus Martin–Chief security officer of the starliner Titanic, he’s opposed to many of the decisions that his superiors make. However, once disaster strikes he does his utmost to defend the vessel against alien invaders no matter what the personal cost.

I think all the main characters share my allergy to gross stupidity and fecklessness. I firmly believe that an honest mistake is tolerated, but a decision made from cowardice or conscious ignorance should be punished severely.

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I have two short stories also available on Amazon. “Ride of the Late Rain” is the prequel to An Unproven Concept and provides the first introduction to the Vergassy Universe. “Pandora’s Memories” is an alternate history short story that begins the Usurper’s War, which is a universe whose point of departure is Adolph Hitler’s death in a November 1940 bombing raid. The Usurper War’s first novel, Acts of War, will be (hopefully) published by the end of the year. Last but not least, I will have a post-impact (Scythefall Universe) short story also appearing before the end of the year.

We’ll look at for all of that. Where should we look?

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m a Missouri native who spent my childhood between two small towns after my father retired from the United States Air Force. After a stint as an officer in the United States Army, I came back to the Midwest to go to graduate school. I’m back to working for the Army as a civilian, and hope to finish grad school within the next year or so. While my books are usually grim, I’m generally an optimistic cynic. Or put another way, I may always want to believe the best is going to happen, but I’m well aware people have a way of managing to screw that up.

How easily do new storylines come to you? If we give you four random words – Man, Woman, Mexico, Future – can you give us a brief storyline?
When the chaos of the Great Plague descended upon the United States in 2029, ironically many Americans in the Southwest attempted to flee into Mexico. This was, of course, fool’s gold. For a man, death usually came quickly via either disease or the swift, brutal application of violence in its many forms. For a woman, oftentimes death was far more diverse and heinous but no less certain. It was a lawless time, and in a nation already brutalized by the cartels’ iron grip humanity was in far too short a supply for the desperate influx of Norte Americanos.
