But these heroes are just dysfunctional.

Former hero Tom North moved to a rural town in the middle of Kansas. His dream was to waste away the rest of his days in a quaint house, reading newspapers and drawing in his spare time while the world wore on around him. Things changed.

Trevor Rembrandt, once the fearsome vigilante known as Fivestar, recently revealed to the public his true identity and put his wealthy family’s entire fortune at risk. With the help of his stern assistant Riley Trudeau, Trevor was forced to seek refuge in Kansas.

The infamous Doctor Demon was once one of the world’s greatest masterminds. For reasons unknown, he re-branded himself as a reality television star and found himself in the good graces of the public. And then he was recruited to help a disgraced hero clean up his act.

This is The Team Up.

What genre is this?
The Team Up is a blend of humor and super hero fantasy. It’s like “The Avengers” meets “Arrested Development,” filled with characters who are never perfect and always trying to best each other. There’s also a hint of new adult sensibility.

We’re liking the sound of this more and more.
The story details the struggle of four characters trying to adjust to a new and simpler life in rural Kansas. Tom North is a former hero who retired from his role as Megaton City’s protector so he could enjoy the bucolic life. He’s enlisted to help another hero, disgraced vigilante Fivestar, retire his hero identity and disappear into obscurity. Tom is aided by reformed supervillain and habitual evil genius Doctor Demon, who happened to once be Tom’s arch-rival. The team of man-children is kept in partial order by government agent Riley Trudeau, who might be the strongest member of the team.

Which one of the team is based on you?
Since most of the characters behave badly in different ways, I think I’ve inserted bits and pieces of myself into each of the team’s members. Tom is the part of my psyche that likes quiet solitude, while Doctor Demon is the part of me that can’t help but look at car wrecks as I drive past. Trevor Rembrandt is the childish drunk who hides in some dark corner of my head and Riley Trudeau is the conscience that tries to keep everything in check.

I’m a nerd who draws comic strips or writes loud and heavy music when he’s not writing weird fiction. My mom introduced me to reading, my dad introduced me to writing, and my older brother introduced me to genre fiction. When I’m not being creative, I waste precious time with awesome video games.

What’s next?
I’m reworking a stage play that I wrote in 2012 and will soon publish the next installments of “Roswell Newton” and “Divine Intermission.” And after that, I have a very weird, full length zombie novel to finish.

How easily do new storylines come to you? If we give you four random words – Man, Woman, Mexico, Future – can you give us a brief storyline?
A man sneaks across the Mexican border to evade American authorities after stealing what he thinks is a crate of confiscated drugs, which he plans to sell to a prominent cartel. When he opens the crate to check his loot, he discovers that it is actually a containment unit holding a woman who claims to be a researcher from the future. The cartel and agents from Area 51 close in as the criminal tries to help his new comrade correct the course of history.
