TRUE COLORS is about Landry Albright, an eighth grader who wants to fit in and be considered one of the interesting girls at school. Part of her wants to stand out, but there’s another part that just wants to fit in, too. She gives in when her two best friends, Ericka and Tori, push her into trying out for a teen reality show modeling competition. Landry doesn’t think she stands a chance, but she makes it to the next round. However, her friends do not and suddenly Monday morning at school feels very different. Landry tries to make new friends, but gets caught in between wanting to be herself and conforming to who her new friends want her to be. Along the way she learns that modeling is not what it seems, how to deal with frenemies, a new crush, and how a true friend encourages you to be yourself.

What genre is this?
Upper middle grade/younger YA. It’s a clean reads book.

That’s good. Who’s it aimed at?
Tweens, teens, and anyone who has ever wanted to fit it and just be noticed, but still wanted to fade into the background just a bit. Anyone who enjoys funny stories about friendships, frenemies, and middle school drama.

Tell us about Landry.
Landry is an eighth grader who just wants to be noticed and fit in, but still shies away from the spotlight at times. She finds herself conforming to fit in and gets away from her true self. She makes friends who are more sure of themselves, like Thalia, Peyton, and Ashanti, and they encourage her to be herself. She wants to be more self-assured and wouldn’t mind if the modeling competition were to make her a big star…assuming she doesn’t have to wear heels in public or talk in front of a crowd.

Landry and I share a similar sense of humor and way of looking at things. Neither one of us is good at math and spent that class time daydreaming.

Most teens would identify with Landry.
And, we hear, that’s a good thing. Tell us why.
I’m working on a sequel to TRUE COLORS that picks up right where this book leaves off with Landry and her mom going to visit her dad. We also both faked our way out of gym class participation (sorry Mr. Delaney!) and like to read.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I write for teens, tweens, and adults. I started out in journalism and love writing humor essays and columns, too. I have been writing since I was a kid and have always loved to read. I’ve lived in Michigan, South Dakota, Terceira Island, Portugal, and Ohio. I received my master’s degree from the University of Michigan-Flint. I rarely leave a bookstore empty-handed and I’m still slightly bitter that my mom gave away my Sweet Valley High collection.
