The 50 Self-Published Books Worth Reading 2013 2014

Over the years, the term Self-Published has taken on many folds of meaning. Perhaps positively, it has suggested daring, virgin genres, and authors whose voices will not be silenced. But more readers feared the negative: poor craftsmanship, zero editing, amateurish packaging. The unspoken question always was: if this book is worth my time, why isn’t it traditionally published?

Things have changed. It is estimated that, in 2013, over 500,000 were self-published. Yes, some must have been poor, badly-written, not worth the digital ink; but many were good.

And some were great.

Over 6 weeks in April and May, 2014, we received just under 50,000 suggestions as to the very best of the best. The range was breathtaking – from stories of new love, to sagas of new worlds. We could have compiled a list of 100 titles without a drop in quality. These 50 are not the only indie books worth reading; they are the simply the best place to start.

They cover a wide spread of styles and genres: romance and erotica, paranormal, fantasy and science fiction, thriller and horror, literary and memoir. Something for everyone. We have ranked them according to the number of votes they received.

Welcome to the brave new world of self-published literature. Suddenly it looks exactly like the world of excellent, exciting writing you’ve always known.

The internet is a lawless place. As proof of the honesty of these results, we are publishing spreadsheets containing all valid votes we received. (The only criterion we used for validity is that no more than 5 votes were allowed per IP address.) All our data can be accessed here.
