Interview with M. L. Weaver, author of The Lightness of Dust

Tell us about The Lightness of Dust.
The Lightness of Dust is, at its heart, the story of one young woman’s search for belonging.  In telling the tale I explored the lives of people in three separate, but intertwined, timelines:

Kere is an ancient Anatolian girl who possesses the gift of healing. Her love, Telamon, must find a way to amass enough wealth to prevent her father from selling her to the priesthood.

Samuel Freeman is the caretaker of the Persephone Music Hall in 1940 Seattle.  His life is changed forever when Lily Ostendorf, a beautiful foreign violinist, arrives in town.

Jake Morgan is a newly minted college professor in Davis, California.
He and his wife Elyse have no idea what is in store for them when Amanda Angona joins Jake’s research group.

What genre is it?
That’s hard to say.  It’s fantasy, but there are no wizards, knights, or elves.  It’s paranormal, but no ghosts haunt the story.  Romance is a strong theme, but will there be any happy endings?  The best description came from a reviewer who labeled The Lightness of Dust a dark fantasy.  But even that isn’t entirely accurate.

If it’s all those things, what kind of readers will it appeal to?
If you enjoy elements of the supernatural but love stories that center on everyday people leading (almost) everyday lives, then you may enjoy this book.

Are there any hidden surprises in the book?
There is one Easter Egg.  When I was wrapping up editing in preparation for publication, I realized that although I had been seeing Sam’s face clearly since the rough draft, nowhere in the book was one important characteristic mentioned! So I inserted a single word to wrap that up.  Still waiting for a reader to notice! (Hint: it’s in Chapter 19)

Complete this sentence for us: if you like _________________, you’ll love The Lightness of Dust.
the idea that the gods walk among us, and aren’t so different from us

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
The Lightness of Dust is my first published novel, and the first in my planned series The Meronymy.  Book Two is in draft form now!

Really? What is it called?
I can’t share the title, yet, but I can share that the first draft is nearly complete and I should be publishing it later this year!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from California, but after receiving my Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Davis I moved to the Pacific Northwest with my wife and son.  I enjoy reading, but when I’m writing I avoid most fiction.  So I turn to textbooks (history, science, etc.).  My favorite sport is fencing (epee especially); love it but I’m not very good.  At all.
