Interview with Paul McMahon, author of Dead Reckoning
Dead Reckoning is an unconventional literary novel told in 1st person present tense. It’s a gritty philosophical comedy set in and around prison exploring themes of corruption, drug culture and morality. The reader is party to the constant cerebral monologue of the protagonist as he obsesses over every detail of his existence. Who is the protagonist? Told ‘in the moment’, this novel takes you on an alcohol-fuelled struggle to rid the prison of drugs, with exactly the opposite result: there’s more heroin in the prison than there is on the surrounding streets. So much so, that it can only be down to corrupt staff – a fact which Mr B finds impossible to ignore, especially when he inadvertently becomes one of them! We’re already intrigued.
