Interview with Danielle Benji, author of Emily Discovers Psychology
Emily Discovers Psychology is about a eight year girl “Emily” who looks at a commercial on TV about bullying and how kids like her can prevent it. She becomes very interested in the subject and eager to learn more about it. After getting advice from her parents, Emily finds out that one of her classmates named “Mitchell” is a victim of bullying. Using her parents’ advice, she becomes friends with Mitchell, but she is puzzled . Emily begins her quest for answers and discovers the career of psychology. Emily discovers psychology is an educational, engaging and inspiring story that raises awareness of Asperger’s and the Autism spectrum in a way that children can relate to. wonderful to read a book that introduces children to what psychologists do and also encourages them to appreciate people who are different and equal to themselves. What genre is it? The genre is children book. What kind of readers will it appeal to? The book will appeals to parents who have children on the autism spectrum. Tell us a little more about Emily, and maybe something about her family. Emily is a bi -racial very inquisitive little girl who loves to learn about different careers. She lives in suburbs of Maryland ,but is very close the metropolitan area of D.C. Emily mother is medical assistant & her father is a lawyer. Emily explores different careers while traveling around the city with her family & friends. Do you think you’ll write about Emily again? I’m working on one other book called Emily Meets the Cobbler inspired by my mother who as an entrepreneurial cobbler . In this book Emily will discover that her favorite dress-up shoes have lost their color. She contemplates throwing away the shoes, but soon learns about the shoe cobbler and takes them to a shoe repair shop with her mom. Emily is surprised to find that the shoe cobbler Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and still lives there today with my daughter. Although I suffers from a mild case of cerebral palsy, she has continued to succeed, reach for her dreams, and meet all of life’s challenges with the intent of living a normal and happy life. Growing up, I was always artistic and musical. I wrote songs, played the piano, sang, and danced. My writing career developed from her passion for writing, an activity that she has enjoyed since the age of seven.
