Interview with Jams N. Roses, author of Get Clean

Cocaine is everywhere. Young men and women sniff the ‘recreational drug’ as often as they spark up cigarettes or sip beer. It’s typical of a generation educated by music videos and tabloid newspapers…

I’m Jimmy Walker, a smart young man with a caring family around me. I’d have the world at my feet, if only I wasn’t addicted to white powder. A change of scenery can be a good thing, but it turns out that moving from suburban England to the south of Spain isn’t the best idea when trying to get clean. The Costa del Sol is Europe’s main point of entry for my favourite poison.

Under the Marbella sun, I’m falling deeper into the darkness of drug addiction. With pockets full of cash and bags full of Coke, I’m being led astray by a psychopath named Jason, an Aussie who loves the sort of random violence I’d only ever seen in films.

Getting high is easy, and so is hitting rock bottom… But can I Get Clean?

What genre is this book?
This is a crime book. We could push our luck and call it a coming-of-age, but that would really depend on how sober the characters ended up – and it isn’t pretty picture for all of them. It has often been described as a thriller, too, and I think that cap fits.

Based on true events.

True events?
Get Clean is a half fiction/half autobiographical book set in Marbella, where I found myself in the middle of lots of drugs and the trouble that followed.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
The book is funny in places and dark in others. The two main characters are drug addicts, next to them is a manipulative lady, so if you don’t mind reading about bad people who do naughty things, this book should suit.

Tell us about the character based on you.
Jimmy, is a weak-willed individual who has turned to drugs, in part, due to suffering from depression. The cause of the depression becomes clear within the story. The reader, like Jimmy, will have a hard time seeing how he’ll get himself out of the mess he put himself in, even though he fights almost daily with himself about getting clean.

And Jason?
Jason is a crazy guy who makes for excellent reading, but a terrible friend. One of the best characters I’ve ever written.

And you’ve written some pretty interesting characters in the past. We’ve interviewed you about Extremely England and Son of a Serial Killer.
Son of a Serial Killer is currently in the Amazon UK Top 100 chart, so I’d recommend that. Also, ‘Finding Her Feet‘ has been getting some great reviews, this is a drama/contemporary tragedy, and should be read with a box of tissues handy.

Will we tissues for Get Clean too? How will it leave us feeling?
Drained.

The story moves at a fast pace, and I hope the reader feels satisfied by the natural justice that is dealt to some of the characters.

Tell us a bit about your life now.
I am a father of one and grew up in Hertfordshire, England. I’ve spent a few years living on the Costa del Sol, Spain, and currently reside in Nice, France.

I primarily write novels that are steeped in crime with a psychological twist, but have a naughty sense of humour that can sneak its way into my work, so much so that my third of four releases, Extremely England, is a hilarious, satirical comedy.

What’s next?
I’m putting together the treatment for my next project, which will be confronting some of the issues in modern England, and Europe. I’m not 100% sure which angle I’ll take when writing it, but I think it’ll stir emotions in its readers. But that’s the point.
