Interview with Debra Dunbar, author of The Imp Series

Tell us about The Imp Series.
Samantha Martin is a demon, an imp actually, masquerading as a human for over forty years as a sort-of vacation.  She’s had to restrain her demonic urges to avoid detection and extermination from the angels, but she can’t help letting the imp out of the bag every so often.
Life as a human has changed Sam.  She’s developing a set of ethics, and fighting it every step of the way.

In A DEMON BOUND, she finds herself having to discharge a blood debt to the werewolf community which puts her smack in the path of the deadly angels.

Sam then chases down a demon relic to save her brother from the wrath of a high level demon in SATAN’S SWORD.

In ELVEN BLOOD (spring 2013), she’ll be hunting down a demon spawn in an attempt to get that same high level demon off her own back.  All the while she’s balancing her feelings for her best friend and human boyfriend, Wyatt, and her growing fascination with the angel that has bound her.

What genre is it?
I’ve always struggled with this question!

I listed the books as Urban Fantasy because the protagonist fits the strong, paranormal, female lead generally found in that category.  I’ve had a reviewer also list it as Paranormal Thriller.

“Rural” Fantasy might be a better fit, since a big city doesn’t drive the tone of the books.  There is a lot of comedy, even with the dark plot and the obvious amoral actions of my demon heroine.  There’s also romance, and quite a bit of hanky panky.  If only there were a Dark Rural Erotic Comedic Fantasy genre!

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
I’ve had readers compare this series to Kim Harrison’s The Hollows books, and also to Christopher Moore’s writing.  A recent reviewer compared it to the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead.  Anyone who enjoys books with a strong, fun, naughty heroine in a modern day fantasy setting should love them.

Complete this sentence for us: If you like _________, you’ll love The Imp series.
A humorous, bad-girl imp kicking ass!

Supernatural powers apart, is Sam Martin based on a real person?
No, although my husband is convinced that Sam’s hunky boyfriend, Wyatt, is based on him!  I couldn’t write Sam’s quirky sense of humour if I didn’t think the same way, though.

When writing about imps, werewolves, vampires and angels, how constrained by the rules established in the mythology and in the works of other writers do you have to be? Do you follow them strictly, or do you choose which ones to abide by?
I do read a lot of mythology, fairy tales, folklore, and religious history, and that is the foundation I draw from in my world building.  Beyond that, it’s all my own imagination.  I have a notebook where I keep the backstory of the book, and I reference it when writing.  Most of that detail will never grace the pages of the series, since it would bog down the plot flow, but I’ve got to have it all planned out to give the story a sense of depth and history.

When you think back to the very earliest thing you ever wrote, what in it makes you cringe and what parts of it are you still proud of?
Oh my!  I wrote a very cringe-worthy piece of fanfic back in college.  I AM proud of the fact that I actually completed a 60k novel, even if I’d never want it to see the light of day.  And I did learn a lot.  I started with a protagonist that simply had nowhere to go in terms of character development.  Because of that, the theme ended up being about how she caused growth in the other characters.  Maybe I could have pulled it off had I been a more experienced writer, but back then, the heroine just ended up being preachy and flat.

Writing a book is never easy, but other than that, what has been the toughest part – editing or marketing?
I outsource my editing, paying for both a proofreader and a crit editor as well as a coder who also loads my books on the various sites.  I’ve yet to outsource marketing, so that’s probably the toughest for me.  I’ve still got the corporate-day-job going, and finding time to do social media, check out conferences, advertising, signing events, and shill my book to local bookstores is an uphill battle.  There just aren’t enough hours in the day!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live on a farm in Maryland with my husband, three boys, and a whole host of animals.  Hubby is a creative guy.  He’s written, directed, and produced an indy feature film, owns a photography studio, and is opening a farmhouse brewery this year.  I’ve been the corporate/MBA kind of gal, but he’s inspired me to finally give priority to my writing.  Everyone needs to have a creative outlet.

I run, and I am totally hooked on those crazy mud runs.  Strangely enough, I knit, and I enjoy baking, although I seldom have the time for it.   I love horseback riding, but I suck and fall off a lot.  Really, I’m one of those people who is game to try anything.  Life is just so darned interesting.  I can’t imagine ever being bored.

Living on the East Coast, I hope you weren’t hurt by hurricane Sandy. (Ed: this interview is taking place days after the hurricane)
We were very lucky.  We’re a good distance from the coast, and thankfully, flooding was minimal and we were without power only 24 hours.  Since we’re on a farm, we have a generator and an alternate heat source.  I feel for all the people who have lost their homes, especially those who don’t have flood insurance to help them rebuild.

Have you got a site where readers can keep up with your work? And do you use social media?
My website at http://debradunbar.com is where I blog about books, movies, and all sorts of crazy things.  On Facebook, I’m DebraDunbarauthor, and on Twitter @debra_dunbar.  I’m active on all three, and each shows a little different side of me.

Where can we buy your books?
Amazon has my Imp Series in both paperback and Kindle, and also my short stories.  My author page is here.   I’m also on Smashwords, B&N, Kobo, and All Romance E-books.

What’s next?
The third book in my Imp Series, ELVEN BLOOD, is due out in early April.  I’m also working on a collaborative graphic novel for the series that is scheduled for a late summer release.

I like to intersperse my novels with short stories, and I’m outlining and researching a zombie cop series, DEAD SHIFT.  I’m hoping to have the first in that series out around the first of the year.
