I made him a middle-aged extension of who I was when I was young. What I might have turned into if I hadn’t had children and settled down. So creating him was a lot of fun.

Now we’re curious about your career.
I’ll write an autobiography one day. Until then all you get is I came to Thailand in 1977 and had a colourful harum-scarum existence, and for the last twenty years I was a PI handling cases of a serious nature.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Everyone, I have been surprised by the diverse audience it has appealed to. I didn’t think the detective was going to appeal to women at all, but I was very wrong.

Have you written any other books that we should read next?
I have just had a short story published in a collection of well known authors – Death Toll 2. The second Carl Engel book will be out later this year.
