Tell us about Freestyle Love.
Freestyle Love is a story about:

Good-looking and single, Malachi Bishop is a man at the top of his game. He has a good job, good friends and a nice home. But Malachi’s life is about to be upended when Cole Malcolm, a smooth-talking management consultant, appears on the scene. Malachi, still mourning the loss of Taylor Blanchard, resists Cole’s play for his heart. Then there’s Zach Brennan, a handsome twenty-five-year-old and student at the college where Malachi teaches, who Malachi can’t help but fall for.
Freestyle Love is a story of an “imperfect” love and the choices made when under the influence of love. For Malachi, it’s a later affair with a beautiful stranger that changes his life most dramatically. Now Malachi must confront his present and his past that bring into question the larger fantasies of home and his place in the world.

What genre is it?
Literary Fiction / Gay & Lesbian / Romance.

What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Freestyle Love will appear to readers who are interested in human interactions, who are curious as to why people do the things they do.

Complete this sentence for us: If you like _________, you’ll love Freestyle Love.
If you like Iris Murdoch, Dave Eggers, Alan Hollinghurst, E. Lynn Harris or April Sinclair, you’ll love Freestyle Love.

Tell us a bit about the process of writing a novel. What happens on Day 1?
On Day 1 of writing a novel, I simply sit down and start to write. For me, a novel begins with a vague idea. I have a mental picture of the protagonist, of the conflict, but I have no idea how the story will move from the beginning to the end. I let the characters lead. I don’t plot, I don’t outline, so the first draft is usually a “mess”. For example, at the beginning of the story the protagonist could have brown eyes but by Chapter Four I may have forgotten that and all of a sudden he has green eyes. The first draft is about getting the characters and storyline on paper; the shaping of the narrative and character development really comes in the subsequent drafts.

In the Stephen King novel, Misery, the author always celebrated finishing a book with a cigar and a drink.  Do you have any little rituals?
When I finish writing a novel, I celebrate with a nice meal and a dry glass of white wine (most often Australian).

What are your tools of choice when it comes to promoting Freestyle Love – Facebook, Twitter, soliciting reviews or something else?

Have you got a blog where readers can keep up with your work?

What’s next?
